OREGON UNIVERSITY DENIES FAVORITISM

The president of Oregon Health Sciences University denied Sunday that he was doing a political favor for Sen. Mark Hatfield when he accepted Hatfield's daughter as a medical student.

Elizabeth Hatfield Keller was among a handful of students who entered the school in 1989 in the first year of a special admissions program devised and administered by the school's president, Dr. Peter Kohler, The Oregonian reported Sunday.

The newspaper described Hatfield as a prime benefactor of the university. As senior Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Hatfield helped steer $91 million in federal grants to the school over the last decade.
