MARY SUE TERRY STANDS UP TO APCO

THANK HEAVENS for Attorney General Mary Sue Terry. According to your March 3 edition, she says Appalachian Power Co.'s rates "should be even lower, and indeed . . . no increase is justified."

How many other politicians have the guts to stand up to one of the nation's largest corporations, American Electric Power, the parent company of Apco? Very few. No males, so far as I know.

West Virginia is being dealt a double whammy by Apco. Not only do they want to increase our power rates by 8.8 percent, they also are going to turn around and use it to build a 765-kilowatt power line through one of the last unspoiled regions of Appalachia. In addition to Monroe City, W.Va., the line would rip through the Jefferson National Forest, Appalachian Trail, New River Gorge, etc. Needless to say, Virginians won't be safe from the ravages of this "mother of power lines."
