CLIFTON FORGE FORMER MAYOR IS DEAD AT 80

Russell Benjamin Smith Jr., a civic leader and former mayor in Clifton Forge, died Monday. He was 80.

Smith, a retired conductor for Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, served on City Council from 1972 until last year.

He had been a chief of the Clifton Forge Fire Department and was a member for 42 years. At the time of his death, he was president of the local volunteer firemen's association.

Smith, who attended Clifton Forge High School, was mayor from 1975 to 1976. He also was vice mayor for 10 years.

He had been a member of the city's Parks and Recreation Board and the city Planning Commission.

Funeral will be held Wednesday at Nicely Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. William O. Moore officiating.
