Lake Speed, a veteran driver who has sat out the season without a sponsor, will replace Trickle in the April 7 TranSouth 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.
Speed won the TranSouth 500 in 1988, his only Winston Cup victory.
A source close to the team said Speed was only confirmed to drive for the team at Darlington.
"We're just going to look at it race by race," he said.
Trickle, the 1989 Winston Cup rookie of the year, had run in four races this season. His best finish was 11th in the season-opening Daytona 500.
Trickle, 49, has never won a Winston Cup race, although he has won more than 1,000 on the Midwest's short tracks. He won $74,785 this season, pushing his career earnings to $761,655.
