RANDLE HEADS LIST FOR STATE HALL OF FAME

Sonny Randle, who caught passes in the NFL for 11 years, is among six former athletes who will be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame on May 3.

Other honorees include golfer Wynsol Spencer and VMI two-sport standouts Johnny Mapp and Lynn Chewning. Olympic sprinter Archie Hahn and baseball star Edwin "Cy" Twombly will be honored posthumously.

Randle, who graduated from Virginia, spent most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He coached at Virginia from 1974-75.

Spencer, a 1937 graduate of Newport News High School, won five Virginia amateur golf championships. He also won the Peninsula amateur title 11 of 13 tries and placed second the other two times. Spencer turned pro in 1959.

Mapp, from Granby High School in Norfolk, starred in track and football for the Comets and at VMI. He is a physician in Virginia Beach.

Chewning, who excelled in football and track, played at VMI, the U.S. Naval Academy and Hampden-Sydney. He played pro football with the New York Bulldogs in 1949 and the Richmond Rebels in 1950.

Hahn, a track star at Virginia, won three sprint events in the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. He coached track at Virginia for 13 years.

Twombly, a pitcher, played at Lehigh University and Springfield College. He signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1921. His best game in the majors was a five-hitter against the St. Louis Browns, in which he struck out George Sisler four times. He coached at Washington & Lee for about 50 years.
