CHILHOWIE TEEN-AGER KILLED IN CRASH

Six students who were skipping class Tuesday at Chilhowie High School were involved in a car accident in Smyth County that left one of them dead and another critically injured, state police said.

Trooper M.D. Spangler said Nancy Jane Pennington, 17, was killed when she lost control of the car on a curve along Virginia 600 on Iron Mountain and skidded into a tree shortly before 1 p.m.

Christy Stewart, 14, was taken by state police helicopter to Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tenn. A nursing supervisor said Stewart was in critical condition Tuesday night.

Patrick Taylor, 16; Marcus Breedlove, 17; Herbert Michael Jackson Jr. and Stephen Frye were taken to Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Taylor and Jackson were listed in stable condition Tuesday night. Breedlove and Frye were transferred to Bristol Regional, where Frye was in guarded condition and Breedlove was in stable condition.

All three teens riding in the front seat were not wearing seat belts, Spangler said. Those in the back seat had buckled theirs after efforts to persuade Pennington to slow down had failed, the trooper said. He said she was driving about 65 mph.

Chilhowie High School Principal Cleve Compton said the school staff learned of the accident just before classes let out. No announcement was made to the student body.

Compton said the students had left school without permission about 10:30 a.m. Normally, students must sign out at the school's main office before leaving the grounds, he said.

There were no plans to close school or hold any special assemblies, but Compton said that could change. "We just found out about this. We don't know what we might do," he said.

The principal said a crisis counseling group likely would visit the school today to help students and staff cope with the incident.
