SPARTANS START SEASON WITH BASEBALL VICTORY

Cory Epperly struck out 12 and walked four as Salem opened its high school baseball schedule with a 3-1 victory over William Fleming on Tuesday.

Tracy Butt led Salem hitters with three doubles.

Tommy Page had single and double for Fleming.

Fleming tied the score 1-1 in the top of the third, but Salem went ahead for good 2-1 when Gavin Fisher singled in Scott Switzer. The Spartans added their third run after Chris Miller scored on an error.
