PULASKI COUNCIL VOTES TO ACCEPT MALL'S UTILITY LINES

Town Council agreed Tuesday night to accept water and sewer line extensions to the Memorial Square Shopping Center into its utility system.

The shopping center on Memorial Drive is to open soon, although no date has been announced.

The new water and sewer lines were tested after being installed by W.D. Development at its own expense and in consultation with town engineers and staff.

Accepting the lines as part of the town system means the town will maintain them. For the first year or until warranties by the contractor expire, however, the owner is responsible for maintenance.

Council authorized Town Manager Don Holycross to execute an agreement with W.D. Development which would allow the town to connect the lines into other lines in the future.

In other business, council:

Considered raising the speed limit on Randolph Avenue between 5th Street Northwest and the town limit from 25 mph to 35 mph. It will take public comment at its April 2 meeting before making a decision.

The engineering department did a study and found that speeds average close to 35 mph there already. Police Chief E.J. Williams had no objection to the change.

Agreed to a $220,000 street resurfacing contract with Virginia Asphalt, the low bidder for the work this year.

Was told that the town engineer has gotten notice from the Virginia Department of Health that it is issuing an amended operation permit to reflect the upgraded capacity of the town's water plant to 4 million gallons a day.

Passed a resolution honoring William H. Elmore for his work during a three-year term as president of Pulaski Main Street Inc., the downtown revitalization program.

Elmore has declined to run for an additional term. The annual Pulaski Main Street membership meeting will be held Thursday night at the Pulaski Community Hospital Education Building and new officers will be elected.

Passed resolutions honoring the Lady Cougars basketball team for its showing in the state tournament, and honoring student chess players at Pulaski County High School for their showings in a recent tournament.
