150 VOLUNTEERS SEARCH FOR STAUNTON WOMAN

About 150 volunteers joined the search for an elderly Staunton woman missing since Monday. Relatives said she may have Alzheimer's disease.

Searchers Tuesday turned up a pair of mittens that might belong to Mary Elizabeth Maddox. Police said they have several reported sightings of the woman.

Maddox, 73, was last seen about 11:30 a.m. Monday, after an Augusta County sheriff's deputy spotted her walking along a road and picked her up.

The deputy asked Maddox her address, and the woman gave the wrong one. The deputy dropped her off near the site of a home where she lived several years ago.

"That dwelling is no longer standing," said William Dixon, who is coordinating the search for the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference, a Charlottesville-based volunteer squad.
