CLOSING OF LANDFILL MAY COST LOCALITIES

Fairfax County's decision to close the Lorton landfill will cost Northern Virginia jurisdictions and the District of Columbia an additional $15 million annually, officials say.

Some officials say the county Board of Supervisor's decision to close the landfill by 1995 will result in local governments trucking trash more than 100 miles.

The supervisors voted Monday to close the landfill, which is west of Interstate 95 at the Lorton exit in southern Fairfax County.

"We have to seek other options," said Valerie Lemmie, Arlington's director of the Department of Environmental Services. "It could be West Virginia, it could be Maryland."
