GROUP AAA DISTRICT SPLITS IN TWO

Commonwealth District high school principals have voted to split the district beginning in the fall of 1992.

The creation of two districts will mean the Group AAA Northwestern Region will have four five-school districts and give twice as many athletes from the formerly nine-team Commonwealth District a chance to advance to regional playoffs.

One district, which likely will retain the Commonwealth name, will consist of the present district's five easternmost schools: Woodbridge, Gar-Field, Potomac, North Stafford and Stafford.

The unnamed "western" district contains Stonewall Jackson-Manassas, Osbourn Park, Fauquier, James Wood and Hylton, which is scheduled to open in the fall.

The Northwestern Region and the Virginia High School League must approve the plan.

The new western district might look for another school, since James Wood has plans to drop to Group AA play after a new school opens in Winchester in 1993.

James Wood Principal Donald Shirley said he has heard Albemarle mentioned as a replacement if his school leaves Group AAA. Albemarle Principal William Raines said his school, a former Commonwealth member, wants to leave the Western District.
