"It's a done deal," said Tommy Allison, Davey's cousin and spokesman.
In joining the Robert Yates racing team, based in Charlotte, N.C., McReynolds leaves a similar job with Quaker State Racing, which has Brett Bodine as its driver.
McReynolds, Tommy Allison said, "had been somebody that Robert had sought after for a year and a half, him being from Birmingham. Davey had known him for awhile and had wanted to work with him."
The change, Allison said, "came about all of a sudden, and I don't know anything more about it."
With the next NASCAR race not until April 7 at Darlington, S.C., McReynolds will have some time to work with his new team, including at least two testing sessions before then.
Elder picked up the nickname "Suitcase" because he has worked with so many racing teams during his career. He is recognized as one of the best chassis men in stock car racing.
"He's got a real feel for it," said Jim Freeman, spokesman for the Talladega Superspeedway.
Allison said he did not know Elder's next stop. "I'm sure he's lined up something but I don't know what," he said.
