HELP US TELL YOUR WAR STORIES

The war in the Persian Gulf is over. But for the 500,000 American service personnel who were sent to the gulf, the memories and stories of time spent serving the country will never be forgotten.

The Roanoke Times & World-News wants to tell those stories - through the eyes of the Southwest Virginians who were there. In a special report to be published this spring, we'll try to show what the war was like for military personnel from our part of the state.

But we need your help. We want you to share with us copies of any letters or pictures you may have received from the gulf. Please send them to us at: War Stories, Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke, VA 24010. We won't be able to use all the photos and information we get, but the bigger selection we have, the better story we can tell. Unused photos will be returned, provided you send us a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

We also want to hear from or talk directly to as many military personnel from our area as possible.

Please drop us a line or send us a snapshot. War participants back in the states can call us toll-free at 1-800-346-1234, ext. 341, and ask for either Dwayne Yancey or Tom White. Those still in the gulf can call us collect at (703) 981-3341. The best time to call is between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST, eight hours behind Persian Gulf time.

Deadline for receiving this information is 5 p.m. April 26.

We hope this end-of-the-war special report, in which Southwest Virginians can tell their own stories about their service in the gulf, will be a keepsake that you, your friends, families and neighbors will cherish for years to come.
