CRASH VICTIMS' CLASSMATES GET COUNSELING

Representatives of a Bristol-based crisis center visited Wednesday with classmates of six Chilhowie High School students who were involved in an accident that left one dead and sent the other five to hospitals.

"It's very helpful," Principal Cleve Compton said of the crisis program made available in such cases. He said a brief assembly program about the accident also was held, and regular class schedules were maintained.

The accident occurred Tuesday when a car driven by 17-year-old Nancy Jane Pennington jumped a curve along Virginia 600 on Iron Mountain and hit a tree. She was killed.

Christy Stewart, 14, remained in critical condition Wednesday at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Another passenger hospitalized there, Stephen Frye, was in fair condition.

Marcus Breedlove was released after treatment at the Bristol hospital. The remaining passengers, Patrick Taylor and Herbert Michael Jackson Jr., were treated at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion and released.

All six were students at the school and had left without permission Tuesday morning.
