HOKIES TRIP 49ERS 9-4 IN BASEBALL

Sophomores Dannis Simmons and Josh Haggas each hit a home run in the second inning to lead Virginia Tech to a 9-4 college baseball victory over UNC Charlotte on Wednesday at English Field.

Simmons led off the inning with a homer, the first of his career, and, after Steve Render was hit by a pitch, Haggas hit his homer, also his first.

The 49ers (10-13) pulled to 3-2, but Tech's Justin Dobson gave the Hokies all the runs they would need with a two-run triple in the fourth inning.

Tech pulled ahead 7-2 in the sixth and added a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings.

UNC Charlotte scored twice in the top of the seventh, but Tech pitcher Brad Clontz (4-2) worked out of trouble and went on to a complete-game victory.

Tech (9-6) had 13 hits. The Hokies are scheduled to play host to Virginia Commonwealth at 3 p.m. today.
