GLENVAR STARTS SEASON BY BEATING SHAWSVILLE

Sean Grinnell's two-run triple broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning and led Glenvar to an 8-6 victory over Shawsville on Wednesday in a non-district game that was the high school baseball season opener for both teams.

Glenvar entered the seventh trailing 5-4 but scored the tying run on an error.

Glenvar's Greg Anderson was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Glenvar pitcher Doug Croy threw four innings and struck out eight.

In other high school baseball action:

Scott Martin pitched a two-hitter and drove in two runs to lead Liberty past Staunton River 4-1 in a Seminole District game. Martin struck out nine and walked three.

Liberty is 2-0; Staunton River is 0-2.

Kevin Dehaven and Richard Bowman each drove in a run for Carroll County, which beat Giles County 6-2 in a non-district game.

Stacy Hutchison was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Giles (0-1).

Carroll County is 2-0.

Fort Chiswell's Brian Pearman went 3-for-3 and had a three-run home run to lead the Pioneers to an 8-5 victory over Pulaski County in a non-district game at Fort Chiswell.

It was the season opener for both teams.

B.W. Hill was 2-for-3 and was the winning pitcher for Fort Chiswell.

For Pulaski, John Akers had a three-run homer.

Jefferson Forest pitchers allowed just one hit but walked 12 as Appomattox beat the Cavaliers 6-5 in a non-district game at Appomattox.

The Raiders (2-0) scored four runs in the sixth inning without a hit, taking advantage of five walks. Jefferson Forest (0-2) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but the rally died with runners on second and third.

Cavaliers Troy Smith and Anthony Poindexter each went 2-for-4; Poindexter drove in two runs.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Forward A.J. Esguerra's first-half goal held up as North Cross beat Northside 1-0 in a non-conference boys' game at North Cross.

It was the season-opener for both teams.
