ROANOKE MAN KILLED TRYING TO AVOID CRASH

A 21-year-old Roanoke man was killed Wednesday night when his truck swerved to miss a turning vehicle on Alternate U.S. 220 in Botetourt County and collided with a tractor-trailer.

Richard L. Hale of the 1400 block of 6 1/2 Street Southeast was thrown 82 feet from his truck during the collision. His body was found lying in a yard, state Trooper P.E. Brown said.

The tractor-trailer, which was empty, clipped the right side of Hale's truck after it had swerved out of the northbound lane into the southbound lane shortly before 5 p.m., the trooper said.
