Bins have been placed at the county's six elementary and two high schools and the landfill on Virginia 775 so residents can deposit brown, clear or green glass; steel, bi-metal or aluminum cans; and paper, including newsprint, magazines and cardboard.
Representatives from the county government, schools and civic groups explained to students the importance of recycling and showed them items that could and could not be recycled.
Bonnie L. Newlon, assistant county administrator, said revenue from the sale of recyclable materials will go into the county's general fund and will be available to promote the program.
Botetourt elementary students are designing a poster and high school students are designing a logo for the recycling program.
Winners, to be selected during the Board of Supervisors' April 15 meeting, will receive cash prizes from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post at Trinity.
All entries will be on display in the Old District Court Building in Fincastle Monday through March 28.
