CENSUS NOT LIKELY TO ALTER CRAIG MAGISTERIAL DISTRICTS

Craig County, unlike most other localities in Virginia, might not have to revamp its magisterial districts because of the 1990 census.

And if it does have to alter the district lines, the change should be slight.

But once an apparent error is corrected on the census map, County Administrator Richard C. Flora said the population of 4,372 will be almost evenly divided among the three magisterial districts.

This even division would eliminate the need for a redistricting, Flora told the supervisors Tuesday.

The error, which Flora spotted on the map, has the district line between the New Castle and Alleghany districts about a mile out of place.

Each magisterial district in Craig, based on the total population, must have at least 1,384 people but no more than 1,530 to keep the same district lines.

With the line where it is, the census gives the New Castle District 1,542 people and the Alleghany District 1,418.

However, correcting the error on the map should correct the figures, Flora said, and eliminate the necessity for redistricting.

The census shows the Simmonsville District with 1,412 people.
