VIRGINIA UNION STUNS NORTH DAKOTA

Walter Hurd's free throw with nine seconds left capped a stunning comeback to give No. 3 Virginia Union a 64-63 victory over No. 1 North Dakota in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II basketball tournament Thursday.

Virginia Union (26-4) scored the last nine points. It trailed 61-49 with 3:30 left when Mike Mathews came off the bench to hit two quick 3-pointers. Scott Guldseth, who led North Dakota (29-4) with 26 points, answered with a layup.

Then center Derrick Johnson, one of four freshmen starting for the Panthers, added two layups to cut the margin to 63-61 with 55 seconds left. A basket by Hurd tied it 63-63, and he added the winning free throw with nine seconds left.
