NCAA GIVES REGION FINAL TO VIRGINIA

The growth of the University of Virginia's women's basketball program made the school a good site to host part of the 1992 NCAA Tournament, a member of the NCAA women's basketball committee said.

Virginia was picked to host the East Regional semifinals and regional final.

"For their women's team to draw the way it does is a credit to UVa coach Debbie Ryan, to their administration for its support of women's basketball and to the kids," said committee member Alfreeda Goff, who is an assistant athletic director at VCU.

Goff said Wednesday that Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth were the only schools in the region to bid for the event. VCU requested either the 1992 or '93 regionals, but Virginia wanted only next year's tournament, so the NCAA was able to satisfy both institutions.

The Cavaliers will play in Charlottesville if they reach the semifinals. The games are set for March 19 and 21, 1992.

The Cavaliers must play in the East Region if they receive an NCAA Tournament invitation, according to guidelines set by the women's basketball committee. The team will play in University Hall and host three other schools if UVa advances past the second round. - Associated Press
