The tactic paid off, and Durrett completed a 300 game at Lee-Hi Lanes bowling center in Salem.
"I tried to pretend I was starting a new game," said Durrett. "That seemed to work very well for me."
Durrett, from Roanoke, had a 298 game in 1987, but "I choked on the last ball then." He wanted to make sure the same thing didn't happen Thursday. The 25-year-old "tried to remain calm," even though people "started crowding around me" prior to his final frame.
Durrett, 25, had games of 191, 221 and 300 for a 712 series. He said he carries a 189 average in the Lee-Hi Rollers league.
An unusual aspect of his perfect game is that Durrett does not use his thumb in the bowling ball. He cradles the ball against his wrist and uses his fingers in the ball for control and direction. - Staff report
