SALEM STOPS RVC 15-11

Salem scored six runs in the first inning and six in the fourth on its way to a 15-11 victory over Roanoke Valley Christian on Thursday in a high school baseball game shortened to 4 1/2 innings because of darkness.

Scott Switzer and Chris Miller each homered in the Spartans' fourth inning. Switzer finished with three hits and two RBI, and Richard Goodpasture had two RBI on two triples.

The Eagles committed eight of the game's 13 errors.

\ SOFTBALL: Stacy Brugh, Belinda Smith and Felessia Orange each had two hits as James River stopped Alleghany 7-5 in the season opener for both teams.

The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the fifth inning and again in the seventh, but Knights pitcher Kara Mundy stopped the threat with a strikeout in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Orange had three RBI to power James River.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Lori Cochran scored with two minutes remaining in the game to break a tie score and give Patrick Henry a 2-1 Roanoke Valley District victory over Cave Spring.

The Knights (0-1) led 1-0 on a first-half goal by Chandra Ingram, but Patrick Henry (2-0) tied it on Beth Prillaman's goal in the second half.
