Mr. Hugh S. Calhoun, age 94, passed away at his home in Elk Creek, Va., March 21, 1991. He was born in Clifton, N.C., September 26, 1896, the son of the late Thomas M. and Lenora Graybeal Calhoun. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Hash Calhoun and by both of his children, Hugh Ralph and Virginia Irene Calhoun. He is survived by three grandchildren, Randolph Calhoun, Wytheville; Rick Calhoun, Vinton; Rena Moyer, Wytheville; five great-grandchildren, Renee Moyer and Krista, Jay, Brian and T.C. Calhoun; one sister, Mrs. Florence Calhoun Renaud, Dayton, Ohio; Brig. Gen. F. Earl Calhoun (retired), Santa Rosa, Calif.; J. Lawrence Calhoun, Blacksburg. He was enrolled in college at Berea, Kty., when he and many of his classmates volunteered for the service in the U.S. Army in World War I. After his release from service he bought a farm in Wythe County, Va., and a short time thereafter became a partner in a soft drink bottling business in Marion, Va. During the period 1922-1954 he was a store keeper in the Elk Creek community. He represented Grayson County in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1946 to 1948. He succeeded his father as president of the Bank of Elk Creek and served in that capacity until the bank merged with the Grayson National Bank in Independence, Va. He served as vice president of the merged bank until the time of his death. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1971, after 15 years of service. He was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in the Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Eminhizer officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va. where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:00. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Lebanon United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, the Independence Rescue Squad, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va. is in charge of the arrangements.
