Although the budget would require $146,186 more in county funds for 1991-92 than this year, the total will be $400,000 less next year - $22.5 million, as compared to $22.9 million.
School Board member Rhea Saltz asked what would happen if the Board of Supervisors says there will be no more local funds. Asbury said further cuts would damage the educational program and could mean a massive layoff of employees.
The School Board is to schedule a budget session with the supervisors about mid-April.
"And I hope we can convince them that it's been an honest effort to keep the numbers as low as possible" and still support a quality program, Asbury said. He said he felt that was the goal of the supervisors, too.
The board spent much of the day going through the proposed budget in detail during a workshop that started early Friday morning.
State funding is projected to be 4.8 percent less next year, and county appropriations up by 2.3 percent, Asbury said. The overall budget would be down by 1.7 percent from this year. State money is less in every category next year.
