MONTGOMERY SITES LISTED ON HISTORIC REGISTER

Several historic properties in Montgomery County have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, including two historic districts in Blacksburg and three in Christiansburg.

The Montgomery properties listed in January and February were nominated as a package as a result of a grant awarded to Montgomery County in 1988 by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

The county used the grant to hire Gibson Worsham, a Christiansburg architect, to evaluate historic properties that were identified in an earlier architectural survey of the county. Local archaeologist Clifford Boyd helped Worsham prepare the nomination.

The properties listed include:

The Blacksburg and Miller-Southside historic districts in Blacksburg.

The East Main Street, South Franklin Street and Cambria historic districts in Christiansburg.

The North Fork Valley Rural Historic District and the Riner, Shawsville, Lafayette and Prices Fork historic districts in Montgomery County.

The Bowyer-Trollinger Farm, the North Fork Roanoke River Bridge, the Christiansburg Post Office, the Madison Farm, Joseph McDonald's Farm, Piedmont Camp Meeting Grounds; and the Walnut Grove Farm, all as individual properties.

The multiple listing of historic resources is the first such listing in the state, according to the Department of Historic Resources. In addition, the properties were entered into the Virginia Landmarks Register in June 1989.
