BLACKSBURG VOLUNTEERS HONORED

The many volunteers who help shape Blacksburg's future were formally recognized by the town Thursday during a dinner at the Red Lion Inn .

"If there are any humble people who are in this room tonight, we are the ones," said Mayor Roger Hedgepeth, referring to council members and the town staff.

He thanked the numerous boards and commissions that make recommendations to the council for helping ensure that the town's motto - "A special place to live"- remains true.

Town Manager Ron Secrist acknowledged the spouses, partners and families of the citizen-volunteers, and thanked them for their patience.

No less than 163 volunteers serve on 37 groups, many serving on more than one board or task force or commission.
