KNOXVILLE SWEEPS ECHL PLAYER HONORS

Right wing Stan Drulia, who led the East Coast Hockey League in scoring while pacing the Knoxville Cherokees to the regular-season title, was selected the league's most valuable player Friday.

Drulia collected 140 points on a league-high 63 goals and 77 assists in 63 games played. The 140 points were the second-highest total ever amassed in the third-year league, ranking only behind Erie's Bill McDougall, who scored 148 points in 1989-90.

Drulia's linemate, center Dan Gauthier, was named rookie of the year. Gauthier finished second in the scoring race with 134 points (41 goals, 91 assists) in 60 games.

The two honors gave Knoxville a sweep of the ECHL's major awards. Last week, Cherokees second-year coach Don Jackson was named coach of the year.

The ECHL's 11 head coaches and one media representative from each league city participated in the balloting. - Staff report
