GIRLS GET OK TO PLAY BASEBALL

A five-member appeals panel of the Virginia High School League voted unanimously Thursday to allow two girls to play baseball at Falls Church High School.

Karri and Terri Mills, 15-year-old twins, were members of the Falls Church junior varsity until last week when the VHSL executive committee ruled they could not play.

"We based our ruling on the premise that baseball and softball are comparable sports," said Earl Gillespie, executive director of the VHSL.

The league prohibits boys or girls from playing on comparable sports teams.

The league allows boys and girls to play on the same team if there are no corresponding teams. For instance, boys have been allowed to play on girls' field hockey teams.

The appeals panel ruled that baseball and softball were not comparable sports.

The girls will have to make the team through tryouts. - Associated Press
