GRETNA - Robert Carrington Vaden, Jr., age 77, of Gretna, Va., died Thursday, March 21, 1991, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Born October 13, 1913, in Gretna, he was a son of the late State Senator Robert Carrington Vaden and Kate Paris Vaden. Mr. Vaden graduated from William and Mary College with a B.A. degree in 1934 and received an M.A. degree in English from the Univeristy of Virginia in 1937. He taught high school in Pittsylvania County and Newport News, Va., from 1934-1942. He served in the U. S. Naval Reserve from 1942-43. He was Director of Instruction in Fredericksburg City Schools from 1943-45. Mr. Vaden was an accomplished classical pianist and was a professional church and concert soloist in New York City from 1945-48. Mr. Vaden was a representative of the American Book Company, now Litton School Textbook publishers from 1949 until retirement in 1971. An active member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna, he served as a deacon, historian and trustee and was a former teacher of an adult Bible Class. He was a Mason and a Scottish Rite Shriner. As a history buff and genealogist Mr. Vaden assisted in the publication of two books of Family History. He belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution, the Patrick Henry Chapter in Lynchburg, The Suzanne Rachette Chapter of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin, The Virginia Historical Society. In 1976, Mr. Vaden was appointed to the Bicentennial Commission of Pittsylvania County and on the committee for the restoration of Yates Tavern Circa 1750, a historical landmark in Gretna. Mr. Vaden was a former member of the board of directors of Peoples Bank of Gretna now Crestar. AT the time of his death, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pittsylvania County Public Library Foundation. He was active in the building of the Pittsylvania County Public Library dedicated in 1990. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Charles Kavanaugh (Kathryn) Sparrow of Martinsville, Va.; Mrs. William (Dolley) Sanford Terry of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Charles Craddock Vaden of Columbia, S. C.; nine nephews and three nieces. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. W. D. Lilly. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Edwin Edmunds Bouldin, Robert Vaden Bouldin, Robert Thornton Vaden, and Richard Vaden, William Sanford Terry, Jr., Dr. Charles Kavanaugh Sparrow, Jr., and Dr. Charles Vaden Terry. Friends may call at the home, 111 Washington Street, Gretna from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Fund of the First Baptist Church, Gretna, Va. 24557, the Gretna Rescue Squad, Gretna, Va. 24557 or the Pittsylvania County Public Library, Chatham, Va. 24531.
