STUDENTS FAVOR DRUG LEGALIZATION

Drug raids at the University of Virginia will renew student interest in legalizing drugs because students know their friends who were arrested are not criminals, University Libertarians said Saturday.

"They sit next to these guys in class. They work with them in the university's volunteer organizations, and they are their friends," said David W. Garland of the group. "If anything, this fiasco will further undermine the respect people have for law enforcement officials, as it should."

Garland, a senior, said the group plans to respond to the raids with a poster campaign, directing the Drug Enforcement Administration to "Go arrest real criminals" and saying, "Drug use is a vice, not a crime."

Garland said the group's leadership is about half a dozen and that the membership list includes 30 or 40 people.

"This drug raid and confiscation of private housing is a wake-up call for us all," Garland said. "What we intend to do is let people know why they don't feel enthusiastic about the raids, which is that the laws in this area are irrational."

The federal government confiscated three fraternity houses allegedly used for illegal drug transactions - Phi Epsilon, Delta Upsilon and Tau Kappa Epsilon.

U.S. Attorney E. Montgomery Tucker identified eight charged in the federal indictment as Mark E. Croy, 22, of Pearisburg; Matt Evans, 19, of Virginia Beach; David Freelund, 21, of Glen Cove, N.Y.; James Graham, 21, of Richmond; Eric Heller, 22, of McLean; Ernest Pryor, 19, of Goochland; Andrew Bryan Schwaab, 21, of Fairfax Station; and Peter Shaffer, no age or hometown given.

Graham and three others were charged in a state indictment: James A. Carter, 19, of Newport News; Patrick Hanrahan, 22, of New City, N.Y.; and Steve Marvin, 23, of Charlottesville.
