SHERIFF SUSPECTS ARSON IN TIRE FIRE IN SUSSEX

A fire that burned between 500,000 and 750,000 old tires was deliberately set, officials said.

"We're hoping to make an arrest in the near future. At this point, we believe it was a set fire," said Sussex County Sheriff E. Stuart Kitchen Jr.

Witnesses told authorities the fire started at the rear of the 3-acre tire dump in two piles about 50 feet apart.

The fire at the defunct Tri-City Tire Co. near the Wakefield Municipal Airport started about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
