FIVE FORKS JOINS NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM

It rained Saturday as some 200 dignitaries and spectators gathered for the dedication of the Five Forks Battlefield Park.

It also rained 126 years ago when Union and Confederate soldiers clashed and died in one of the final battles of the Civil War coming just before Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox just a few miles away.

The 2,400-acre Civil War site joins with the Petersburg National Battlefield as a unit of the National Park System.

Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan canceled his planned appearance because of bad weather.
