OFFICIALS DISCUSS STRIKE

Local officials from Volvo-GM Heavy Truck Corp. and the United Auto Workers union met for four hours late Friday, but no settlement was reached in the 2-week-old strike.

The meeting was "off the record, informal," said Local 2069 President Joe Parah.

Representatives from the UAW International and from Volvo's corporate headquarters in Greensboro, N.C., did not attend the meeting, Parah said.

Volvo officials could not be reached for comment.

An informational meeting for the roughly 1,000 workers on strike against the Pulaski County truck factory is scheduled for 3 p.m. today at the union hall on Slaughterhouse Road.

"We just want to get the troops together and get them ready for another week," Parah said.

UAW officials have cited economic and job security issues as reasons for the strike, the first labor stoppage at the 17-year-old Dublin plant.

Parah said the local officials who met Friday did not set a time to resume formal negotiations.
