McTHENIA, ALFRED E.

GLADE SPRING - Mr. Alfred E. McThenia, age 90, died in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va., Sunday, March 24. He was the last survivor of eleven children of Charles W. and Nancy Jane Widener McThenia. He was a member of Byars-Cobbs United Methodist Church. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, having served as Postmaster at Lodi, Va., rural U.S. mail carrier on horseback between Lodi and Widener's Valley, Virginia, the Railway Postal Service, and retired from the U.S. Highway Post Office. He was a former member of the Town Council and also Mayor of Glade Spring. He was a noted historian in Washington County and a member of the Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cletus Ratcliffe McThenia, in 1984. Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Olga and Arthur L. Goff Jr., Evelyn and Douglas Hale, all of Glade Spring; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Carrie Holland McThenia, Abingdon; grandchildren, Ted McThenia, Abingdon; Bonnie (Mrs. Ed) McFall, Greenville, N.C.; Christopher Goff, Bronxville, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Emma Virginia Goff, Bronxville, N.Y.; two stepgranddaughters, Mrs. Paul Saylor, Mrs. Lonnie Ashcraft; one stepgrandson, Harvey Holland; three stepgreat-grandsons; two stepgreat-granddaughters; and one stepgreat-great-grandson, all of Kentucky. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Farris Funeral Chapel in Abingdon. Interment will be in Old Glade Cemetery, Glade Spring, Va.
