FINDING SOLUTION TO NEWS/AD PUZZLE

AFTER READING your corporation's headline news article on March 7, "Zoo sees open space as draw for wildlife program," as usual I clipped it for my file and included the top of the page reflecting the 1991 Metro Tournament.

Browsing the remainder of your newspaper, I was amused to note so many paid advertisements from local businesses striving to survive in a time of crisis and economic uncertainty. At first I could not comprehend why you would, apparently, on one hand charge for advertisements, and on the other hand allow Ewert and his zoo people free time as headline news.

I then blinked and the illusion became crystal clear: It was solicitation of money from unsuspecting visitors to our valley for the notorious tourist-oriented zoological/frontier town/Blue Ridge town travelers' village/native American/Lewis & Clark cultural heritage/educational living-history state theme park/zoo and to protect your investments.

It appears that the "red wolf" has already arrived at the trough, gobbled up the lions, tigers, bears, beaver and big-eared bats, and stands impatiently waiting for the slop to be poured. CHARLES L. WILLS VINTON
