SEARCH SUSPENDED FOR MISSING WOMAN

An extensive search has failed to locate a 73-year-old woman who walked away from her Mint Spring home last Monday.

Authorities on Saturday night ended an organized search for for Mary Maddox that at one point included 150 volunteers.

Augusta County Sheriff Glen P. Lloyd said the case will remain open, but on a smaller scale.

"We'll continue to search and answer any leads we get," he said.

A representative of the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference said the search of Greenville, Mint Spring, Spottswood and the Interstate 81 corridor ended at 10 p.m. Saturday.

The last sitings of Maddox came from the Mauzy area in Rockingham County.

"All our leads came to naught," Rockingham County Sheriff Glenn Weatherholtz said. "She's either not in this area or something has befallen her."
