VIRGINIA BEACH - Ruth Flinn Harrell, 91, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, a retired research professor at Old Dominion University, died March 19, 1991 in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Harrell was the first dean of women at Old Dominion University and was the first women's department chairman at the university. She was also a former chairman and professor of the Psychology Department at Old Dominion from 1955 through 1970. She received undergraduate degrees from Wesleyan College, Marion, Ga. She received her master's degree and her doctorate in psychology from Columbia University. A native of Americus, Ga., she was the widow of William Lee Harrell. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Harrell Bassett of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. J. Sheppard Russell. Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall after the funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the Old Dominion University Research Foundation.
