"Obviously, this is what AT&T wanted, which was to get NCR to the negotiating table," said Jack Grubman, a telephone industry analyst at Paine Webber Inc. "Now the chances of no deal happening are virtually nonexistent."
The move by NCR, the No. 5 American computer maker, came four days before a special shareholders meeting to consider the offer by AT&T.
American Telephone and Telegraph Co. said last week it would pay $100 a share for the company if the stockholders of NCR voted out the company's board. If the vote fell short of the 80 percent needed to oust the board, AT&T said it would continue with its $90-a-share offer. - The New York Times
