"He told someone here he was going half-speed," joked his wife, Kitty.
Aloha shirts and sneakers have replaced his three-piece suits and dress shoes, and the former Massachusetts governor and his wife have settled into a cottage in a lush valley near the University of Hawaii.
But the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee is on anything but a vacation.

\ Julia King, wife of radio and TV talk show host Larry King, has lost a round in court for her divorce bid. She was seeking spousal support on the grounds that the estranged couple's legal residence is in Philadelphia.
Common Pleas Judge Leonard Ivanoski agreed with the talk show host, who argued that the couple's official address is his apartment in Arlington, Va., and that the case could not be heard in Pennsylvania.
King conducts an evening interview show for Cable News Network and a late-night radio talk show on the Mutual Broadcasting network from Arlington.
"The judge did the right thing. The case properly belongs in Virginia," said King's attorney, Albert Momjian.
Julia King's chief attorney, Richard Sprague, was out of town Monday and his office declined comment on what he planned to do next.
At a hearing Friday, Sprague said his client was receiving no financial support from King.
Momjian said King had set aside $100,000 for his wife when they got married and that $60,000 of that hasn't been spent and she can use it for support.
The couple's divorce is pending in Virginia. They were married Oct. 7, 1989.
