SALEM BATTERS FRANKLIN COUNTY

Yo Helm drove in three runs and Salem pounded out 10 hits to down Franklin County 7-2 and win the Optimist Club of Roanoke Invitational softball tournament at the Salem Civic Center fields.

With the score 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Salem (3-0) scored five runs to break the game open. Helm highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.

Shelly Bowles staked Franklin County (3-1) to an early lead with a two-run double in the first. The Spartans tied the score with single runs in the first and third innings. Michelle Harrison had three hits for Salem. Whitney Long (1-0) was the winning pitcher.

Salem advanced to the final by beating Parry McCluer. Franklin County beat Greenbrier East (W.Va.)

In other softball:

Lori McGhee, Erin Humphries and Gerri Stultz each hit home runs as North Cross opened its slow pitch season with a 12-1 victory over Holy Cross in a game halted after five innings.

Kim Mays pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and all of Heritage's runs were unearned as the Pioneers (2-1) downed Patrick Henry 5-0. Senior Kim Saunders, in her first game as a pitcher, struck out five for Patrick Henry (0-1). Emily Pecoul had the Patriots' only hit.

\ SOCCER: In Radford, Joey Hoyt scored the game's lone goal and Lord Botetourt (2-0) defeated Roanoke Catholic 1-0 in the Radford Invitational Tournament.
