MAN ARRESTED IN KILLING THAT TOOK PLACE IN 1974

An arrest has been made in a 17-year-old murder case, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Lawrence Clary said Monday.

Melvin Bennett Jr., 35, of Kenbridge, was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony in the slaying of Horace Linwood Liles.

Liles, 24, was shot to death on Sept. 29, 1974, at the G&R Texaco station on U.S. 1 near South Hill.

Clary said Bennett was arrested Friday and was being held in the county jail under $100,000 bond.
