WILBURN LEADS GILES TO VICTORY

With Giles (1-1) trailing by two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Jared Wilburn tied the score with a two-run double and then scored the winning run on a wild pitch as the Spartans (1-1) beat Tazewell 7-6, in baseball action Monday. Dewayne Doughty was 3-for-3 with an RBI and pitched the final 3 2/3 innings with six strike outs to pick up the victory in relief.

In other baseball:

Scott Martin drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning as Liberty rallied for a 7-6 Seminole District victory over Jefferson Forest. The Minutemen (3-0) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 5-1, before Jefferson Forest (0-3) scored three in the fourth. The Cavaliers tied and then took the lead in the sixth inning. Troy Smith drove in the go-ahead run. Martin was 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Liberty. John and Andy Poindexter each had two hits for Jefferson Forest.

\ SOFTBALL: Yo Helm drove in three runs and Salem pounded out 10 hits to down Franklin County 7-2 and win the Optimist Club of Roanoke Invitational at the Salem Civic Center fields.

With the score 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Salem (3-0) scored five runs to break the game open. Helm highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.

\ SOCCER: In Radford, Joey Hoyt scored the game's lone goal and Lord Botetourt (2-0) defeated Roanoke Catholic 1-0 in the Radford Invitational Tournament.
