ROANOKE MAN CHARGED AFTER ATTACK WITH KNIFE

After a brief standoff, Roanoke police arrested a man Monday night in connection with a knife fight on a downtown sidewalk.

Police said today that an officer saw a man waving a knife and lunging at another man about 6:25 p.m. at Jefferson Street and Luck Avenue.

The man who was being approached at knifepoint, 36-year-old Anthony Wayne Perry, was backing away from the assailant when the police officer stopped his patrol wagon.

The assailant then turned away from Perry and approached the officer, police said.

The officer ordered the man to stop and drop his knife, but the man kept approaching. The officer then drew his revolver and again ordered the man to stop, at which point he did and dropped the knife.

Police charged John Daniel Franklin, 39, of Grand Avenue Northwest with the attempted malicious wounding of Perry.
