S&K Famous Brands Inc., a Richmond-based menswear retailer with a store in Roanoke, on Tuesday reported a 9.7 percent gain in sales but a 34.9 percent drop in profits in its fiscal year ended Jan. 26. Sales rose to $66.9 million from $60.9 million a year earlier. Net income was $1.8 million or 75 cents per share compared with $2.6 million or $1.20. Comparable-store sales were down 3 percent.

A huge jump in tobacco exports brought record-level trade figures last year, according to Alliance International Inc., a trade services firm. Virginia companies shipped $2.8 billion in tobacco overseas last year, an increase of 55 percent from 1989. Total exports for the state were $9.5 billion, up 19.4 percent from 1989.
