AD DECISION EXPECTED AT VMI SOON

VMI superintendent Maj. Gen. John W. Knapp has received the recommendations from the search committee and is expected to make an announcement within the next week concerning the vacant athletic director position at the school.

"We've interviewed five people, and we've made the recommendation to the superintendent," said VMI's faculty chairman of athletics, Col. Tom Davis, who also is chairman of the athletic director search committee. "I think that within the next week some announcement will be made."

VMI has been without a permanent athletic director since Eric Hyman resigned in December to become an assistant athletic director at North Carolina State.

The new athletic director is expected to be chosen from a group including VMI acting athletic director Davis Babb, who has been at the school since 1984; former VMI baseball and assistant football coach Donny White; East Carolina assistant athletic director Jimmy Bass; former Akron University athletic director Dave Adams; and former Tulane associate athletic director and business manager Kim Tidd.

Davis would not say which or how many candidates the committee recommended to Knapp.

White and Bass said they have not yet heard from VMI. Babb, Tidd and Adams could not be reached for comment.

Bass, who is an assistant athletic director for marketing at East Carolina, also is a candidate for the vacant athletic director position at North Carolina-Wilmington.
