CAVALIERS NIP DEMONS IN BOYS' SOCCER 3-2

Lord Botetourt won its third-straight game with balanced scoring and an unusual assist from fullback Stephen Jonsson as the Cavaliers beat home-standing Christiansburg 3-2 in boys' soccer on the Blue Demons' field.

Jonsson, a Swedish exchange student who has never played soccer before, got his assist on the first Cavaliers' goal. Jonsson delivered an indirect kick from midfield that left wing Tim Epperly angled into the goal.

In other boys' soccer:

Andy McDonald had his first career hat trick and Allen Whittle, Tres Moore played a fine defensive game as North Cross beat Salem 3-0 in a non-district game. North Cross is 2-0-1.

Roanoke Catholic beat William Fleming 3-1 in a rain-sodden defensive contest at South Roanoke Park. Three different players scored as Catholic (2-1) dominated the shooting 16-6.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Cave Spring peppered Magna Vista with 61 shots and Chanda Ingram and Lisa Beightol combined for seven goals as the Knights hammered the Warriors 11-0 in a non-district game at Cave Spring. The Knights are 1-1.

\ SOFTBALL: Kelly Fackler hit for the cycle and Fieldale-Collinsville had 31 hits and eight walks in a 30-1 Piedmont District softball mauling of Martinsville.

The Cavaliers (1-1 overall, 1-1 district) led 17-0 after the first inning of a game shortened to five innings because of a slaughter rule.

Fackler had two singles, a double, a triple, a home run, and a sacrifice in five at bats.

Susan Adkins went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and three stolen bases as Laurel Park beat Gretna 14-11 at a Piedmont District game on the Hawks' diamond.

Sherell Fuller had three hits, two RBI and a pair of steals for the Lancers (2-1 overall, 2-1 district).

Amoreli Ronquillo and Liz Landry hit home runs to lead Roanoke Catholic's 19-4 romp over Lynchburg Christian Academy in the season opener for both teams. Shannon Simpson contributed four hits and three RBI and Hinman was 4-for-4 with four RBI.

Kelly Baetz pitched a five-hitter and drove in three runs and Laurie McGhee tripled, had three hits, and four RBI as North Cross crushed Stuart Hall 22-0 in a Blue Ridge Conference game at Staunton.

North Cross is 2-0 overall and in the conference; Stuart Hall was playing in its opener.

\ BASEBALL: Fort Chiswell ruined George Wythe's opener by rallying from a 5-0 deficit to win 7-6 after Doug James scored on Chris Lampkins' double off the centerfield fence. B.W. Hill went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple for Fort Chiswell (2-0). He also had what would have completed the cycle, but his potential homer curved foul.

In Collinsville, Spencer Johnson (1-1) fanned nine batters and allowed three hits and two walks to lead Fieldale-Collinsville past Gretna 6-1 in Piedmont District play. The Cavaliers and Hawks are both 2-1 overall and in the district.

Eddie Spence and Chris Stanley combined for a 13-walk no-hitter as Patrick County beat Tunstall 8-5 in a Piedmont District game at Tunstall.

Jason Fix went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI for Patrick County (2-0) Tunstall lost its third straight.

Martinsville forced a tie in the fifth inning and then sent 14 men to the plate in the sixth while scoring 10 runs in a 13-2 Piedmont District victory over visiting Magna Vista.

Martinsville (3-0) got a nine-strikeout four-hitter from Bobby Snow and Franco Martin had four RBI, including a go-ahead double in the fifth inning. Neither of Magna Vista's runs were earned. The Warriors are 1-1.

Junior right-hander Scott Phillips pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 as Shawsville (1-1) downed Auburn (1-2) 10-0 in a five-inning non-district game. Mickey Akers had three hits and Doug Sober was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
