STUDY FINDS SUFFERING FROM HUNGER

About 5 1/2 million children in the United States under age 12 suffer from hunger, and another 6 million are in danger of going hungry, according to a new study considered one of the most comprehensive investigations of the problem.

"The ultimate tragedy of hunger is that it is wholly preventable. We have more than enough food in this country to ensure that every child is properly fed," said Robert J. Fersh, executive director of the Food Research and Action Center, which conducted the survey.

The study found that about 12.8 percent of all children under age 12 are underfed. The figure for Virginia was 9.7 percent, said Cheryl Wehler, who headed the study.

The study was announced at the beginning of a drive to pass legislation that would change the food-stamp and school-food programs and provide money so that all eligible low-income children and pregnant women get help.
