HOLDUP SUSPECT ARRESTED

A man using a sweat shirt as a mask robbed a Patrick County bank Tuesday morning with a toy gun.

Sheriff Jay E. Gregory said the masked man entered the First National Bank of Meadows of Dan about 11:30 a.m., placed the shiny gun on the counter and demanded money.

He fled with cash stuffed in a plastic trash bag.

Tilman B. Harrison, 53, of Ridgeway faces charges of armed robbery, entering a bank while armed and using a firearm in commission of a felony.

He could receive two life terms if convicted.

Gregory said deputies were dispatched to the bank after security personnel notified the sheriff's department.

Investigator Owen Isaacs and Animal Control Warden Leon Handy hustled to a patrol car to respond.

As Isaacs drove west on U.S. 58 toward the bank he spotted the car used in the robbery. Its trunk was tied down with a piece of black wire.

Isaacs and Trooper A.M. O'Conner, who also was going to the bank, whirled around and chased the car. They took Harrison into custody.

They found a silver toy pistol and the plastic bag with the cash on the front seat.

They also found a gray mask made from a sweat shirt. Its neck hole had been sewn and holes cut out for the eyes, nose and mouth.
