MAN CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ATTACK ON 2-YEAR-OLD GIRL

A 53-year-old Roanoke man was convicted Tuesday of misdemeanor sexual battery involving a 2-year-old girl.

Under a plea agreement reached in Roanoke Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, the man received a one-year sentence, to be suspended after he serves 10 days in jail.

He also was ordered to receive counseling for sexual offenders, and to have no contact with the victim or her family.

The man is not being identified in order to protect the victim's privacy. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Alice Ekirch said the man was charged with fondling the child, who is now 3, at his home in November or December.

The man had faced a felony charge, but Ekirch said it was reduced to a misdemeanor to spare the victim from having to confront the man.
